I really need a Raincoat

Remember this song? Raining in Baltimore by the Counting Crows
"3,500 miles away, but WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE IF YOU COULD?"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pWOn98KZlA

It hasn't rained here in so long, but when he says "I really need a rain coat" I feel like I can relate. It's not about Baltimore, and it's not about rain. It's about change, and life, and regrets. But can you really regret anything?

Before I graduated High School I was thinking of going to Art college in Baltimore. But I met my x husband, got married, and had a baby at 18 instead. How different my life would have been if I had persued that scholarship rather than him. But would I change it? No, of course not! I have my beautiful daughter. And from the events that transpired after my divorce, I met my current husband, and we have two more kids together. But sometimes I miss the dream... the possibilities, the could-have-beens.

This circus is falling down on it's knees
the big top is crumbling down
It's raining in Baltimore fifty miles east
Where you should be, no one's around

I need a phone call
I need a raincoat
I need a big love
I need a pone call

These train conversations are passing me by
And I don't have nothing to say
You get what you pay for
But I just had no intention of living this way

I need a phone call
I need a plane ride
I need a sunburn
I need a raincoat

And I get no answers
And I get no change
It's raining in Baltmore, baby
But everything else is the same

There's things I remember and things I forget
I miss you
I guess that I should
Three thousand five hundred miles away
But what would you change if you could?

I need a phone call
maybe I should buy a new car
I can always hear a freight train
if I listen real hard
And I wish it was a small world
Because I'm lonley for the big towns
I'd like to hear a little guitar
I think it's time to put the top down

I need a phone call
I need a raincoat
I really need a raincoat.

  1. I understand that wistfulness...of what might have been and of course, I would never trade my reality for it but I too have those days where I wonder just like you....I have 2 great kids out of wickedly horrid relationship, like you,met my DH due to the events that occurred after our split, went to college & got my degree while working 3 jobs so I could pay support on my 2 boys who lived with their dad, Mike & I now have full custody and a little princess of our own. Life is good...yet there are those days...I need a raincoat

  2. I really like that song a lot!

I've seen Counting Crows nine times in concert.

The second time I ever saw them, they played that song and a giant Barney (the big purple guy) came out behind Adam Duritz--it was awesome!
